Group of Death went off yesterday, and I mean off! Cerys had a day off yesterday and was home, I was given the option at 8:00am of which ONE game I could Tivo...I chose the Dutch vs. Ivory Coast game, a good solid choice. Well that was before I read Argentina put SIX up against S&M. Luckily all was worked out when I got the Argentina replay later in the evening. NOTE - I still haven't watched the Argentina replay so feel free to comment anyone who has seen it. Day 8 went as follows:
- Argentina 6 - S&M 0 - wow, S&M is a quality side and they were torn apart with 3 goals on each side of the whistle. Good set of quotes from the game on both sides, the young guns, Messi and Tevez got their first run outs and goals in the Cup. Passage secured for the baby blues into Round 2.
- Netherlands 2 - Ivory Coast 1 - Attack of the Van's, Van Nistelrooij and Van Persie get the goals to secure second round action for the Orangemen. The Elephants pulled on back as, "The pint-sized Bakary Kone picked up possession midway inside the Dutch half, accelerated past two defenders and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner."
The only bummers about these outcomes are, the Group of Death is now dead, Argentina and the Dutch are through. Was hoping for some more fireworks out of the Elephants and S&M. One nice thing to note is that Argentina vs. Holland won't, can't, be a game where either team coasts. First and Second place in the group is on the line. The Dutch will be the aggressors as the six goals Argentina put up gives them an insurmountable goal differential. So the Dutch need an outright win.
- Mexico 0 - Angola 0 - uhhhh not much happenin' here folks. One item of note, this is the first point an African team has earned. Angolan keeper had a nice game, congrats to Ricardo. Funny sidebar - Portugal's keep is also Ricardo....I guess if you live in Portugal or a former colony and you want to play keep change your name to Ricardo!
